How to play Gin Rummy

  1. Deal. Ten cards each. The next card is turned up to start the discard pile.
  2. First turn. The non-dealer may take the upcard. If they pass, the dealer may take it. If both pass, the non-dealer draws from the stock.
  3. Each turn draw the top card of the stock or the top discard, then discard one card. You can't throw back a card you just took from the discard pile.
  4. Melds. 3–4 cards of one rank, or 3+ in a row of one suit. Ace is low only: A‑2‑3 is a run, Q‑K‑A is not.
  5. Deadwood is every card not in a meld. Ace = 1, 2–10 face value, J/Q/K = 10.
  6. Knock when your deadwood is 10 or less: discard and lay your hand down. Your opponent then lays off cards on your melds. Knocking with no deadwood is gin, and nobody lays off.
  7. Scoring. A knock scores the difference in deadwood. Gin scores 25 plus the opponent's deadwood. If the defender has the same or less deadwood, it's an undercut: the defender scores 25 plus the difference.
  8. Draws. If only two cards are left in the stock and nobody has knocked, the hand is a draw and is dealt again.
  9. Game. First to 100 wins. Then each hand won is worth 25 more (line bonus), and the winner gets 100 (game bonus), or 200 if the loser didn't score at all.

Controls

Tap a card to select it, drag to rearrange. Colored bars under your cards show your best melds. Knock lights up when the selected discard leaves 10 or less. Hint suggests a move.
